Halloween How-To: Zombie Mermaid
My transformation from red head to a zombie Ariel and how you can make yourself look like a zombie with makeup you already own.
Monday October 28 2013
I really wanted to share my Halloween costume with my readers this year because I love it so much! I had the idea to be a zombie mermaid last year, but didn’t do it. I decided I had to this year while I still have red hair (who knows what color the future holds.)
My costume itself is a Disney by Leg Avenue design of The Little Mermaid. It’s available at Hot Topic.
I like the details on this costume including the tail which has mesh and is iridescent.
I had to wear my purple starfish earrings from Addie LaDawn with this costume.
I found this super affordable Sinful Colors nail polish at Target in the color Gorgeous and thought it was the perfect mermaid color.
Lumi from Sugarpill has always been one of my favorite eyeshadows. It’s super sparkly and you guessed it, mermaid-y.
I used a foiling medium and applied Lumi all over my lid, up to my eyebrow and all the way over to my hairline. (I smudged some mascara on my eye so it wasn’t so neat and perfect looking.) I also used Lumi on my lips so they’d be pale yet sparkly to achieve my goal of looking dead yet pretty.
I didn’t want to use cheap paint-like Halloween makeup so luckily I own Sugarpill’s Tako which is a white eyeshadow. I used a foundation brush to apply this to my entire face.
I started the zombie portion of my makeup by using red lipstick and brown eyeshadow around my eyes, nose, cheeks, lips, neck, and collarbones. This is such an easy way to create a sickly, zombie look with makeup you already own.
NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in Snow White worked well for me. It is a nice deep blue-toned red which looks more like blood than a bright red lipstick would. If you don’t have a lipstick this color, this NYX one only costs $4.
When I applied the lipstick, I put it more towards the inside of my lips so it looked like I had just eaten some brains! I even smeared this around my nail beds and in between my fingers so my hands looked extra boney and gross.
I used Buck, a brown eyeshadow from my Urban Decay Naked palette, to blend out the NYX lipstick and to couture certain areas to make me look more sunken in.
You can see the difference between the very first picture and this one after I added and built up the lipstick and eyeshadow.
Of course, zombies need some wounds too!
For a little extra gore, I used fake flesh and zombie blood on my arms. You can buy these at seasonal Halloween stores.
And that is how I transformed into a zombie mermaid which was inspired by my iPhone case. I went to a Zombie Pub Crawl rocking this costume, so I’ll be sure to update this post with photos when I get them.

Hi,
I realize you posted this a few years ago, but I’m wondering where did you buy the ariel costume? I looked on hot topic, looks like they may have discontinued it. Do you still have it? And if so, are you willing to sell it
Thank you!
